Description:
Greetings! I am Pogo the Toy Poodle. My foster mom calls me Poco, which means “Little” in Spanish. Yes, I am little in size (5 lbs), but have a great, wonderful heart! I’ll let my foster mom tell you my story. Poco is 7 years old. All his life, he was used as a puppy-making machine and wasn’t treated as a pet. When he came into our house, he had a sad, resigned look of a pup that had given up. This was a few weeks ago, and today it’s hard to believe that the happy, healthy, affectionate – not to mention, gorgeous! – Poodle boy running around is the same dog. Poco is now neutered and has received dental care thanks to great team at MARS. His teeth were never cleaned and the poor pup must have been in pain at all times. He now only has 7 teeth, but that doesn’t stop him from eating hard food with voracious appetite. Having a resident Toy Poodle in the house helped Poco figure out the ins and outs of good house manners. He has been following his foster sister around to see what is all involved in being a house pet. He is now potty trained on a schedule. Poco has learned to dance for treats, sit politely while I hook the leash onto his collar, and get excited to “let’s go” (outside). Despite having been kept in confinement all his life, Poco is a natural champ on a leash, doesn’t pull, doesn’t switch sides, just runs beside the human. He still does not play with toys, although he enjoys watching the resident dog carry the toys around, but he plays snuggle, dig and run around with his foster mom. Poco’s natural intelligence comes through in everything he does. For example, he learned to retreat into the play pen (the day location for him and his foster sister) on command in just a couple of tries. Poco has discovered that being scratched behind his ears and petted is a great thing and means he is loved. He is so grateful for attention and affection from his human family. He follows me around and loves it when I call him over for an ear rub. He sleeps beside my pillow at night very quietly. He doesn’t bark at all and is very calm. Due to his past history, Poco would be best with an older couple or a single person who are willing to pamper him, help him continue building his confidence and give him all the love and attention he deserves. Poco will return this affection and be a great companion. Poco would love it if there is another small calm dog already in the house, too. When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care. Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS. We do not transport to potential adopters. How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet. Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks. Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance. Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
