Meet Sporty!
*Housebroken
*great with dogs
*would be a good agility dog

If you’re looking for a smart, confident small dog that is alert and quick on his feet, with no personality issues, who is a lover not a fighter, Sporty is your guy!   In spite of his Sheltie blood, he’s been mostly quiet inside and when looking out the window, hasn’t barked when seeing people and dogs.

He has good social skills especially with other dogs and some political savvy too!   Sporty is the friendly extrovert at the party who wants everyone to get along and have fun.  He makes an effort to meet all the people and dogs and works on a relationship with each. If you play with him or cuddle with him you will become a great friend. And, if you do both – you are truly Sporty’s kind of people!

This guy’s youthful enthusiasm, busy brain and desire for interaction need to be challenged with games, toys and exercise. He’s currently enjoying 2 to 3 mile daily walks but Sporty would enjoy any type of activity that allows him to run, play, sniff and socialize. He loves the dog park!  He actively tries to engage dogs in play and has a ready receptor for messages from other dogs that want to play.

Sporty is believed to be about 3 years old but may be younger.  He is very trusting and loyal and when outside, always keeps his human in sight and regularly runs over to “check-in”.  He needs to interact with every dog he encounters but has shown no desire to stray too far or run away.  He has Sheltie smarts and is such a quick learner and avid student!  He learned to sit and come within days.  Within a week, with a single command, he left all the dogs behind at the dog park and came running when it was time to leave (Yes, treats were involved). This is one fun guy to train! He’d love a family that would teach him some tricks too, maybe even some agility. After all, his name is Sporty!

Though Shelties are known for double coats and shedding, Sporty appears to be mixed with a smaller short-haired breed.  He doesn’t have a double coat and is shedding very little.

Sporty is house trained.  He’s clever and a quick learner who really wants to do the right thing – once he knows what the right thing is according to people!  He is only kenneled when the foster parent is out.  Having a good supply of bones, pig ears or other chewables is highly recommended.  Sporty also loves squeaky toys.

Sporty would be best in a home with people who have time each day to exercise, play and cuddle with him.  He’d very likely be great with children old enough to play and cuddle with him.  He loves being held and laying and sleeping close to someone.  If Sporty had his way, all the people and dogs would snuggle together!

Sporty would enjoy a home with other dogs that are socialized and not aggressive or too dominant.  He especially likes smaller dogs but at the dog park and walking he’s been great with any size socialized dog.  He definitely needs some interaction and play with other dogs – he’s very social.  He’s not shy and persistently maneuvers to be near his human.  This little guy will truly warm your heart and if you let him, your lap!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
