HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN YOUR HEART FOR OLDER DOGS?
THIS PRECIOUS BOY HAS SPENT THE LAST 5 YEARS OF HIS LIFE IN A SHELTER!

ADOPTED!!!!!!!

Our hearts broke into a million pieces when we first heard about Shank. This boy has been sitting in a shelter for almost 5 years! It's too painful to try and imagine what his lonely life has been like.

THIS POOR DOG!! There is no reason for this!

Shank is a German Shepherd mix. He is a senior- his age is estimated to be about 8 and a half. I had a long talk with the kennel manager who filled me in about Shank.

Shank is coming from a rural area of Indiana. Adoptions are pretty much non existent in this neck of the woods. However, Shank had been adopted out on two separate occasions but was returned both times because he was not house broken.
(hmmmmm- why would he be? He's lived in a kennel for 5 YEARS!! COME ON!)
The adopters were apparently not willing to take the time needed to show Shank what was expected of him- the easiest thing to do was dump him.

On several occasions- the kennel manager has taken Shank home with him for the weekend- and tells me that Shank is a complete teddy bear. A wonderful boy- who is just a marshmallow insided. Sensitive and laid back. Friendly, loving and so ready to bond.

Despite his large size, he seems to think he is a lap dog- and will do his best to try and nuzzle his way into your heart.

This boy is SO HUNGRY FOR HUMAN AFFECTION AND LOVE- so desperate to be with people! You know- that's all he wants, really. He just wants a home with a family who will not betray him one more time.

Shank gets along well with other dogs. But he has a deep passion for people.

This boy is mellow and sweet- he has so much time to make up for. He needs a soft place to land right now. He needs a home without a lot of commotion (for now), with patient, loving people who will gently teach him that he needs to do his "business" outside- rather than inside. To show him that he is loved and wanted. And that he will never, ever see a shelter again!

After all he's been through, we think Shank's golden years ought to be the best years of his life!

Great Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog

Won't chew inappropriate items - Older dogs are not teething puppies, and won't chew your shoes and furniture while growing up.

Focus to learn - Older dogs can focus well because they've mellowed. Therefore, they learn quickly.

Know what "no" means - Older dogs have learned what "no" means. If they hadn't learned it, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs.

Settle in with the "pack" - Older dogs settle in easily, because they've learned what it takes to get along with others and become part of a pack.

Good at giving love - Older dogs are good at giving love, once they get into their new, loving home. They are ever so grateful for the second chance they've been given.

WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get: Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality. Puppies can grow up to be quite different from what they seemed at first.

Instant companions - Older dogs are instant companions, ready for walks, car trips, and other things you like to do.

Time for yourself - Older dogs leave you time for yourself, because they don't make the kinds of demands on your time and attention that puppies and young dogs do.

A good night's sleep - Older dogs let you get a good night's sleep because they're accustomed to human schedules and don't generally need nighttime feedings, comforting, or bathroom breaks.

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF SUCH A DESERVING, LOVING DOG WHO REALLY NEEDS HELP!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
