Description:
Sierra (aka Violet) does recognize her previous name of Violet and comes (most of the time!) when called. She is able to sit successfully some of the time too. Laying down is a work in progress, as is heeling on a leash (we are not sure how much she was walked before.)
She is great with housetraining and has a bladder of steel! Absolutely no accidents and she appears to like to go in the same area outside.
She loves being petted and is fine having her feet, teeth etc touched. We are working on wiping off her feet when coming in the house (or body when it snowed) as this appears to be new for her too. No reactivity to sounds thus far. She will look at a noisy truck on the street but doesn't react to tea kettles, loud tv sounds, the vacuum etc.
She is a bit of a picky eater (we haven't yet maybe found the right food for her) but has loved certain treats, cheese, dental bones, etc.
Very docile, and submissive, will take a treat gently from you. Very smart girl. Wants to please. It appears that she may have been hit or kicked before as sometimes she cowers a bit. We haven't seen any aggressive behaviors regarding food or toys.
We scheduled her vet appt. (first one we could get) for next Tuesday for dental check and heartworm consult.
She loves laying on the couch and bed but could be trained not to if needed.
She has some initial fears of going downstairs and is still rather hesitant (maybe the carpeting) but has been able to go down there successfully at times. She attached to my husband and has some separation anxiety (whining, pacing, jumping up to look out the doors and windows, drooling,) when gone but no destruction of anything. We have gotten her to go in the kennel successfully with food but have't put her in there for any amount of time thus far. Due to the whining and pacing, I am not sure if she could live in a shared environment as of now.
We have no children or other cats or dogs so she hasn't been exposed to that. From the previous foster, she was good with the other dogs and ignored the cats and loved the 13 yo son but hadn't been exposed to younger kids.
*Siera did test positive for heartworm and will be receiving treatment provided by MARS to live a long healthy life. *A dog with Heartworms is not directly contagious to other animals. Heartworms are transmitted by an infected mosquito.
When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care. Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS. We do not transport to potential adopters. How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet. Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks. Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance. Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
