Meet Durham

Durham - better known now as Teddy - is at the beginning of his journey to become a house dog.    Like many dogs that come from a hoarding situation, he was pretty "shut down"  when he arrived.    He is frightened of unknown people, sudden moves, and any new situations. He can be skittish and will run and cower if too many things are happening.   This is not a hopeless situation though.   With a calm household, consistent routines, lots of patience and maybe a good stable dog to show him the ropes,  he will learn how being a dog is done.

His foster has already seen him take steps toward learning to trust and try out some of the things housedogs do.    A visiting dog was around for a while and Teddy learned a little about toys and what to do with them - he picked up a toy and carried it around.   Not bad for a pup who doesn't know what treats are for and never saw a toy before.

He is very very polite and quiet in the house. No damage, no barking, no accidents - his fosters provide him plenty of opportunities to get outisde by doing short walks.

He goes in the crate but once he’s comfortable, would rather be out. He does not care about our cat. He is, surprisingly, not afraid of household noises like the vacuum!

Teddy does enjoy walks and might even like to jog. He is good on the leash except when spooked.  The fosters use a double leash to keep him safe.

Far from hopeless, making the trip with a dog like this is one of the most rewarding experiences out there.   Are you willing to make the journey with him?

*****

Durham/Ian is one of over 80 dogs that were rescued from horrific hoarding conditons.  (Read more here:  https://www.midwestanimalrescue.org/info/display?PageID=19584)

Although these dogs have lived most of their life in conditions that no one should ever have to live in, they dogs are enjoying being able to learn to be a dog.  They are full of life and hope. They need a forever that will help them continue to thrive and to learn how great it can be to be a dog and truly be a part of a family.

Each dog is unique and their personalities reflect that.  They are learning crate training, house manners, potty training has been a lot easier than expected, and are enjoying human contact.

Good with dogs and cats.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
