Meet Strider!

Strider was rescued from a hoarders home where he was not getting the attention or vet care he needed.  In spite of his experience, he is still a very friendly & happy dog.  He is looking forward finding a loving forever home where good care will be taken of him.

Strider is a sweet little snugglebug.  He loves to go for walks, play in the backyard, & snuggle.  He walks well on a leash (no pulling) but tends to wander from one side to another.  He enjoys playing in the backyard by himself or with the other dogs in his foster home.  Every 10-15 minutes he will come to the back door to check in with his foster mom.  He will take ANY chance he can get to snuggle whether it's a bed, a lap, or being carried around like a baby-he let the 5 year old neighbor girl use him as a doll including putting a bonnet on him.  He follows his foster mom most places around the house, even into the shower.  He does NOT like to be left alone.  He needs a person or another dog with him for company.

Strider is housebroken.  When he needs to go out, he stands by the back door.  Because he doesn't bark to go out, his foster mom has missed his request a time or two which has resulted in an indoor pee accident.  He does not care for crating/kenneling but will use it if you put him in one.  He cries & whines for about 15 minutes before he settles down.  He is well behaved when his foster mom is gone so is only rarely being crated/kenneled.  He enjoys other dogs.  He likes to play with them but also just be near them.  He has not been exposed to cats.

Strider is both food & socially motivated.  He is not currently demonstrating a preference for one over the other.  He knows his name & comes when it is called.  He has recently mastered off.  His foster mom is working with him on come, sit, stay, give it, & leave it.

Strider doesn't really bark.  He makes more of a grunting sound.  He is currently only doing this at the front door when someone enters or leaves & when he wants to be held or needs help getting up on something like the bed.  Once the issue is addressed he settles down quickly.

Strider's coat is currently thin.  Its growing back with the assistance of medicated baths.  Although he loves water, he only tolerates baths.  Once his coat completely grows back, he will probably have little to no shedding.  He sits still to have his ears cleaned & get his ear drops.  Because his coat is thin, he needs to be brushed/combed very gently.  He currently prefers a grooming glove.  His foster mom has started handling his feet & mouth in order to prepare him for nail trims & using the Leba III spray for his teeth.  He does currently drink water with a clorohex additive to help with his oral hygiene.

The perfect home for Strider MUST have either a person who is home a lot or another dog to provide him with companionship.  The person will need to enjoy being showered by affection.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
